Hills Like White Elephants

My first impression of The Man and the girl, Jig, was they both seemed very on edge, and didn’t seem to get along very well. There definitely was a tense air between the two, which they attempted to douse with various alcoholic beverages. Later on as the story progressed, we gathered that she was pregnant and he wanted her to get an abortion, saying, “That’s the only thing that bothers us.” He wouldn’t even directly address what he was talking about, tiptoeing around what was happing with Jig. Jig appeared to be having second thoughts about getting an abortion, but he continued trying to pressure her into ridding herself of the burden of motherhood. After they went back and forth for a while, I realized that I, in fact, did not like this man at all. He just wanted to travel, and pretty much expected Jig to give up the baby. She seemed like she was having second thoughts, but she still consumed almost as much alcohol as the man did. This showed that she wasn’t particularly concerned about the health of the baby, but she still was on the fence about the abortion. I think he should just suck it up and take responsibility for what is 50% his fault and support her in her decision to have the baby.
